BRENT MYDLAND
vs.
KYLE HOLLIGNSWORTH
In the middle of the Radiators show last Friday night, my good friend (let's just call him Mr. Maloney for this piece), posed to me a question I would have never thought him to ask. He questioned which ivory tickler, on his best night, I thought was better: Kyle Hollingsworth of String Cheese Incident or the late Brent Mydland of the Grateful Dead?
I was taken aback at first, as those who know Mr. Maloney know his fondness for the Dead, his utter respect for their musicianship, and what they've meant to him throughout the years. I should also mention his admiration for The Cheese has been well documented. Either way, I figured Brent was a shoe-in, but no so fast ladies and gents. We then asked one of other good friends, and again, there was a little back-and-forth, but Kyle actually got the vote. "Ok then", I muttered, "let's put it to the masses." And so here we are.
Tell me who you think was better and why. The Poll will close this coming Monday, November 16th, at high noon. The pun was intended.

Brent - Because for 21 years he never had an off night, and his intro to China Doll still gives me goosebumps till this day.

"Who the Hell is "Kyle" "?
Kyle Hollingsworth of String Cheese Incident.
Click on the 2 links in the post: (Kyle Hollingsworth) and (String Cheese Incident), to learn more about one of the finest keyboard players in the world today.
Unfortunately, String Cheese called it quits 2 years ago, but rumours of a reunion a ever-present
Mydlan!
He has a way cooler name.

Kyle.....way heavier presence in the mix/sound of cheese than brent ever was with the dead; cause of jerry:)
On the best nights kyle is an absolute MONSTER in the sound of cheese!!!
Brent was the man. Still is in my book.
BRENT by a mile!!!
Brent, better voice and damn near as good a command as Kyle has on Keys/piano.
Brent was a Star player on a championship team, Kyle played AAA ball for a team that never went pro.
w.w.j.s.? what would jerry say?
Kyle, just ask him. Check out his self-aggrandizing website for a chuckle: http://www.kylehollingsworth.com/biography.htm
Still, I actually would vote for Kyle due to his influence in the band, skill as a songwriter, crazy fast fingers and most importantly, my status as a big Cheesehead.
Not a huge String Cheese fan, so this one is easy for me - Brent. Not only for his playing, but because his vocals extended the Dead's vocal life by 10 years. And he cranked out Hey Pocky Way...

Brent was huge w/his vocals & is a better singer than Kyle. But Kyle radiates the 88 like a madman. He is the better keyboadist. This is from a lifelong Dead fan who still listens to Dead material regularly.
Brent...hands down & in my opinion it's not even close. He played (and looked) like a man possessed & his voice had so much emotion. Just check out Dear Mr. Fantasy and you'll know what I mean..and most of you do.
